Compression Stockings

The men and women who fly fighter jets wear flight suits with built-in “compression stockings.” The difference is that the flight suits operate automatically, inflating to apply pressure when needed to prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Without this action, the pilot would blackout during high-speed maneuvers.

Medical compression stockings aren’t nearly as complex. But there is a great deal more to them than most people suspect. To begin with, they are not merely another type of “support hose” available at most department stores. Compression stockings are prescribed and supplied in a range of pressure and produce a “graduated compression”, applying more pressure to the ankle than to the calf.
